Wellington School

Wellington College is one of the top private schools in the UK for A Level and IB Diploma programs. It provides co-educational, boarding, and day education for students aged 13 to 18. Established in 1853, the school currently has 1,090 students, of whom 475 are in the Sixth Form. The college is located in Berkshire, set on 400 acres of beautiful parkland, just one hour from central London and only 40 minutes from Heathrow Airport. Wellington College is a well-equipped boarding school. All classrooms feature interactive whiteboards, many with projectors and internet access. The academic buildings include information centers and computer labs. The library is extensive, and the science laboratories are fully equipped with everything required for the curriculum.

Sports Facilities

The sports infrastructure includes 13 cricket pitches, 17 rugby pitches, a golf course, and a modern sports complex. The complex contains fitness and aerobics studios, mini courts, and spaces for team sports.

Curriculum and Programs

GCSE: Students choose their GCSE subjects at the end of Third Form. The curriculum is broad, encouraging personal research, independent study, internationalism, and social responsibility. Subjects include Mathematics; English (Language and Literature); Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; at least one Language (Classical or Modern: French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Latin, or Greek); at least one Humanities subject (Geography, History, Ancient History, or Philosophy and Religion). In addition, students may choose from options including Art, Computer Science, Dance, Design Engineering, Drama, Music, Physical Education, and Photography.
Sixth Form: Students choose between the A Level program and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). Guidance, advice, and information are provided to both students and parents to assist in this decision, but students are ultimately free to select the program that suits them best. The school achieves top results in both curricula.

Extracurricular Activities

The extracurricular program is extensive and diverse. Students are given many opportunities to discover and develop their talents. Facilities for creative students include theater, music studios, drama clubs, drawing, design, and applied arts. For intellectually inclined students, there are elective courses and interest-based clubs.

The sports program is equally impressive. Students can participate in cricket, rugby, golf, running, canoeing, basketball, athletics, aerobics, cross country, tennis, swimming, squash, shooting, sailing, netball, polo, equestrian, fencing, hockey, football, and lacrosse.

The extracurricular program also organizes trips and walks both on-campus and beyond, all supervised by boarding school staff.

University and Academic Success

In 2021, thirteen IB students achieved the maximum score of 45 points, with an average of 41.2. 73% scored above 40, and 87% scored 38+. These results make Wellington College one of the strongest academic schools globally for the IB program.

For A Level students in 2021, 25 students achieved A* in all subjects, with 45% of the cohort averaging A*, 80% achieving A*/A, and 96% achieving A*-B.

The majority of Wellington students go on to Oxford, Cambridge, Russell Group universities, or other top institutions in the UK and the US.

In 2021, 95% of Sixth Form applicants gained their first or second choice university, with 16 students accepted to Oxford or Cambridge and 26 choosing US universities. The most popular universities for the 2021 graduates were: Edinburgh (29); Durham (25); Exeter (23); Bristol (16); UCL (14); Bath (12); Imperial College London (9); Manchester (9).

Over the past two years, US universities offering places to Wellington students include Harvard, Brown, Yale, University of Chicago, NYU, Berkeley, UCLA, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and others.

Every year, over 200 Wellington students continue to higher education, studying a wide range of subjects. Wellington College has 14 boarding houses, all located within the campus and within walking distance of classrooms. All houses are small. Boys and girls live separately. Each house has 2–3 bed rooms and single study apartments. New students are accommodated upon arrival. Students move to different houses after the second year of study. Bathrooms are shared on each floor. Every house has lounges, study areas, and small kitchens. Full-board meals are provided, with the dining hall known for its extensive menu.
